Sheree North Candid Snapshot: A Private Moment

You will find studio portraits and movie posters of actress Sheree North easily on the Internet, but this gem was discovered in a box of old snapshots in an antique shop in Rhode Island. Dated October 1957, this was taken when the actress was 24 years old and had been working in movies for less than five years. She is standing (or walking) on the well-manicured grounds of an unknown location, looking almost pensive, wearing dark glasses  and holding cigarette between her fingers, and the package (I think L & M's) in her hand. This is a regular black and white snapshot measuring 3½ x 5 inches. It was printed on Velox paper and is in very good condition except for a tiny crease on the lower left and light marks (perhaps from glue?) on the back.

Biography of Sheree North

Born in Los Angeles on January 17, 1933, Sheree North (Dawn Bethel) was the youngest child of Edward Bethel and June Shoard. She started dancing at the age of ten with United Service Organizations shows, and before she was twenty she had modeled, done musical theater and danced at night clubs.  Growing up quickly, she married at the age of fifteen and had a daughter the next year. She continued dancing in nightclubs, did some modeling and performed in musical theater. In 1954 she signed with Twentieth Century-Fox, and in 1955 she got the part intended for Marilyn Monroe in “How to Be Very, Very Popular.” Since then she has acted in over 50 movies and numerous television appearances. For those who are too young to remember her early career, she appeared in Season 6 of “Seinfeld” as Babs Kramer (Cosmo Kramer’s mother) in the episode called “The Switch” (first aired January 1995).
